Happy Birthday Lulu!

Lulu T. (for Trouble) Puppy, our Labrador retriever turns 5 today! In honor of her birthday we wanted to do something fun for her, something more exciting than dog ice cream or another marrow bone. So Ben found a dog birthday cake recipe online that people can eat too. Here it is:

1 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 tsp. vanilla
1/3 cup honey
1 egg

Mix flour and baking soda. Add remaining ingredients. Pour into greased 8″ round cake pan and bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Let cool.

It is like a carrot cake with peanut butter. Ben also made a yogurt peanut butter frosting to go on top:

1/2 cup strained yogurt (see previous post for recipe) from either plain or vanilla yogurt
1/2 tsp. vanilla (1÷4 tsp. if you use vanilla yogurt)
2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar (1÷2 cup if you use vanilla yogurt)
TB. peanut butter

Combine yogurt and vanilla, then gradually whisk in confectioners’ sugar. Put a couple tablespoons aside in a plastic bag (or pastry bag) for the decoration. Whisk the peanut butter into the rest and frost the cake.

(Yogurt is good for dogs. The sugar isn’t, but it’s her birthday, and she’s eaten worse from the counter…)

Ben decorated the cake as well:

We all enjoyed the cake, espicially Lulu!

Happy Birthday LuLu — maybe sometime you can come and play with Toby dog again.

  • our dog has felt very sad since Belle came into our lives. I am definitely making this soon.

  • I made peanut butter dog biscuits for our dogs. They loved them and so did my son! Happy birthday LuLu!

  • We’ll talk to Lulu about inviting some of her friends–Toby, Joey and Reuben–over for cake next year. And then you can all help us pick up the knocked over furniture :-)

Thanks, all, for the comments, and you should make the cake sometime! It tastes especially good (for humans only) with chocolate chips on top.
