This year we went fishing for the first time as a family. It has been more than 15 years since either Ben or I fished. This endeavor was suggest by our son who must have gotten the notion that fishing was fun from TV. As predicted on the first trip Jonathan was bored within 20 minutes. He also reeled his hook in about every two minutes because he wanted to check.
Our first trip was to the fishing peir at edgewater park in the middle of the afternoon. One of our fellow anglers managed to catch 2–3 medium sized fish that afternoon, but we were empty handed.
Our second trip was to the same location, but this time we went at sunset hoping to catch the fish coming to the surface after hiding in the depths all day. There were more families at the pier this time and a couple of people caught baby bass, however we again went home empty handed. Although this trip was more relaxing and Ben and I both started to appreciate the Zen quality of fishing — but we were still kind of frustrated. The quality of our equipment, I think, added to the frustration as the reel got severely tangled with every cast out.
Our third trip to the same location on a mid September afternoon with a better fishing rod & reel as well as some fake bait yielded the same results. Where is a good place in the greater Cleveland area where you can actually catch fish?

My girlfriends brother-in-law fishes like it is his job. He goes out around the Mentor and Fairport Harbor area with great success. The perch are plentiful and he always catches something! I wish you good luck next time!

It is great to see the father and son got fishing together also to come back empty handed although disappointing teaches us that the fish do not want to be caught hence the word ‘sport’. Bass are best caught early morning or at dusk as that is when they feed but they are very clever fisgh and it takes patience to catch the good ones. Keep Jonathan interest by teaching him how to cats and lay his lure to tempt the fish to bite.
Brad, we’ll try Mentor or Fairport Harbor. Maybe we’ll have better luck! And David, we’ve been planning to go out in the early morning but never get around to it. One of our trips was at dusk, though, without much luck. And actually mom has mostly been the impetus for this–we’ve all three gone out.
It’s a wonderful feeling to go fishing with family!!! Your photos looks great.
